5 Helpful Tips for Adjusting to New Dentures

For men and women with missing teeth, dentures offer a unique opportunity to feel more confident in their appearance and improve the way their teeth function. Missing teeth are often caused by gum disease, decay, or trauma and typically impact the older generation. Getting used to dentures, however, can take time. Use the tips below to adjust to the new mouth wear and become more comfortable quickly.

Eating

Eating is one of the biggest concerns that people have when they first get dentures, especially doing so in public. It will require some practice before you become accustomed to the way the teeth and supports feel against the palate and gums while eating. The best way to ensure that you’re comfortable while eating is to ensure the dentures fit properly. Loose dentures can slip out of place while eating, even when adhesives are used. If you’re concerned about eating in public, consider eating a few different types of foods at home so you can learn to be comfortable with the way it feels to chew. If the dentures start to slip, set up an appointment with the dentist and ask about an adjustment.

Talking

Another major worry people with new dentures experience is speaking. The only way to get used to talking with dentures in is to practice. It may feel strange at first but sooner or later you will get used to it. Try practicing at home by reading a book or magazine out loud.

Breaking-In Period

After you first get your dentures, the dentist will suggest a breaking-in period, which is the amount of time you are supposed to keep the dentures in for. Though it may seem like a good idea to wear the dentures for longer to get adjusted faster, doing so can cause more harm than good. You may end up developing sores which can easily get infected, lengthening your adjustment period.

Cleaning and Maintenance

Dentures need to be cleaned regularly to remove food particles and film. However, vigorous brushing is not required or recommended. You should continue to clean your other teeth, gums, and mouth every day to prevent sores and other issues from arising. It’s also important to make regular appointments with the best cosmetic dentist in Houston, TX, so they can assess and remedy any other mouth problems you have.

Slipping

It’s not uncommon for people with dentures to feel uncomfortable at first. They often feel like their new teeth are too large or are protruding. Typically, this feeling goes away after to breaking-in period ends. However, if the mouth gear slips, causes sore spots, or just doesn’t feel right, feel free to call the dentist’s office for an adjustment. By following these five helpful tips, you can get accustomed to your dentures quickly and without any pain.
