What is Recovery Like After Tooth Extraction?

Recovery After Tooth Extraction

What is Recovery Like After Tooth Extraction?

Tooth extraction is never the first choice — for the patient or the dentist — but is sometimes a necessary step for restoring or preserving a patient’s dental and oral health. At Made Ya Smile Dental, our caring team of Houston, TX dentists makes every effort to save a natural tooth and avoid tooth extraction when possible. If pulling a tooth becomes necessary, however, we will help guide you during each step of the process to ensure you are well prepared and know what to expect. Here, you’ll find important information about tooth extraction recovery specifically, including how you may feel immediately after your procedure, what dietary modifications you may need to make, what complications to watch out for, and more.

When Is It Necessary To Pull A Tooth?

Whenever possible, saving a natural tooth is generally considered the preferred course of action. Some situations, however, may make tooth extraction necessary for the benefit of the patient’s overall oral and dental health. Scenarios where pulling a tooth may be recommended or required include:

  • When impacted wisdom teeth pose threats to oral health
  • When a tooth is severely decayed, damaged, or otherwise compromised beyond salvage
  • When a child’s baby teeth are too crowded to allow for proper eruption and/or spacing of adult teeth
  • To make space for new teeth, orthodontic treatments, etc.

Following a thorough examination, which may include imaging studies, one of our esteemed dentists will recommend the most appropriate course of action based on your individual needs.

How Are Teeth Pulled?

There are a number of possible methods for extracting teeth, and our dentists are committed to using the most modern and advanced dental technology available today. The approach for tooth extraction will vary from patient to patient based on the reason for tooth extraction, the location of the tooth (or teeth) that need to be pulled, the patient’s age and additional personal factors, and other variables. In some cases, surgical incision may be required for teeth that are broken at the gumline or impacted beneath the gums.

What Should I Expect After Having A Tooth Pulled?

Recovery after tooth extraction may also vary based on the type of extraction performed, how many teeth were pulled, the location of the extracted tooth/teeth, and more. Generally speaking, patients should expect some amount of soreness, sensitivity, and bleeding following tooth extraction, and our caring team will provide comprehensive aftercare instructions to help relieve these symptoms as soon as possible. These may include:

  • Avoiding drinking from a straw, sucking, or spitting
  • Sticking to a soft and/or liquid diet of lukewarm and/or cool foods and beverages
  • Using cold compresses as recommended
  • Taking antibiotics and/or pain relievers as directed
  • Avoiding heavy lifting and strenuous physical activity

Generally speaking, recovery after having a tooth pulled is well tolerated, with most patients able to resume the majority of their daily routines — including enjoying a normal diet — within about 1-2 weeks. For surgical tooth extraction, as well as in cases of complex dental problems leading to tooth extraction, recovery can take up to 1-2 months. Following your tooth extraction, our team will discuss what you can expect in greater detail based on the individual details of your case.
