Can Lumineers® Last as Long as Porcelain Veneers?

While traditional porcelain veneers are certainly a popular and effective solution for transforming your smile, many patients are surprised to learn about another option —   Lumineers — that may be more convenient and desirable in some ways. At Made Ya Smile Dental, our team of Houston, TX cosmetic and family dentists is proud to offer a full suite of modern dental restorations and treatments, including Lumineers, to help patients address a range of cosmetic dental concerns and get a brighter, more beautiful smile they can feel confident about. One of the most common Lumineers FAQs patients have is how long their restorations will last and, more specifically, whether Lumineers may last as long as traditional porcelain veneers. Find the answer to that and other Lumineers questions below.

Are Lumineers The Same As Veneers?

Lumineers are similar to traditional porcelain veneers in certain respects, though they are also different in other ways. With traditional porcelain veneers, patients must have a small amount of their natural tooth enamel removed to prepare the tooth and make room for the veneers to sit comfortably and seamlessly next to one another. With Lumineers — which are as thin as a contact lens — no drilling, grinding, or removal of enamel is required. This means patients do not have to have their mouths numbed or lose any of their natural tooth structures. Furthermore, no temporary restorations are required with Lumineers, which can typically be placed in just two visits. Some of the similarities between veneers and Lumineers are their ability to address a wide range of cosmetic dental imperfections and their durability.

What Issues Can Be Corrected With Lumineers?

Much like traditional veneers, ultra-thin Lumineers can be applied to the front of the teeth to conceal a variety of imperfections and irregularities, including:

  • Stained teeth
  • Yellow teeth
  • Tooth discoloration
  • Chipped tooth
  • Cracked tooth
  • Gap between teeth
  • Uneven tooth length
  • Short teeth
  • Small teeth
  • Mild crookedness or misalignment

For more severe cases of misalignment or crooked teeth, traditional orthodontic treatment may be recommended — which can be followed with Lumineers as a final step in the ultimate smile transformation.

Do Lumineers Last As Long As Veneers?

Despite their ultra-thin construction and convenient application process, Lumineers can often last just as long — or even longer, in some cases — than traditional porcelain veneers. In fact, some patients enjoy their Lumineers for up to 20 years before a replacement or repair may be needed. For the longest-lasting Lumineers results, however, it is critical that patients practice proper care, including:

  • Keeping regularly scheduled appointments for dental exams and cleanings
  • Brushing, flossing, and rinsing twice daily
  • Avoiding hard/crunchy/sticky foods, chewing ice, biting nails, etc.

With healthy habits and proper dental and oral hygiene, Lumineers can keep your smile looking its best for years to come.
