How Do Lumineers® Differ From Porcelain Veneers?
&srotate=0)
Lumineers® are dental veneers that can correct how your teeth appear, giving you a healthy and more confident look to your smile. Lumineers are different from traditional porcelain veneers in many ways, and during your consultation with our dentists at Made Ya Smile Dental of Houston, TX, we can show you how Lumineers can offer instant smile restoration.
What are Lumineers?
Lumineers are thin restorations about 0.2 mm thick, about half as thick as traditional porcelain veneers. A dentist will prepare a Lumineer to fit over any tooth within your smile zone. This cosmetic cover can conceal multiple issues such as a chip in your teeth, spacing or gaps, stains or discoloration, or cases where your teeth are misshapen or small. These covers can also cover aging crowns and other dental work that might need restoration.
How are Lumineers applied?
Our minimally invasive and no-prep process for producing a Lumineer starts with an impression of your teeth to determine the size and shape of your veneer. We’ll send your molds to a special lab where the veneers are then fabricated. The veneer is specifically designed on the shape and size of your tooth to provide a seamless look. Once completed and returned to our office in Houston, TX, the Lumineer is permanently bonded to your teeth.
What makes this more useful than porcelain veneers?
While porcelain veneers are a great cosmetic option for many situations, Lumineers are more advantageous in many ways. Since a Lumineer is about half as thick as a regular porcelain veneer, there’s no need for a dentist to trim any enamel from the tooth before applying the cover. You’ll never worry about your tooth becoming sensitive, plus there’s no need for anesthesia during the procedure.
The Lumineer can also be reversed as necessary and we can remove the cover and reshape or adjust it as necessary. With porcelain veneers, a dentist would have to remove the bonding agent from your tooth and potentially remove more enamel to clear everything off the surface of your teeth.
While you will need to wait a few weeks to receive your veneers on average, Lumineers won’t require you to use any temporary veneers. Since you won’t require any trimming off of your natural tooth, the Lumineer can direct go over it without requiring a temporary cover that might look too unappealing.
