Overview

When tooth decay, damage, wear, or other concerns are more extensive than what a simple dental filling can repair, a dental crown may be necessary to restore your tooth. Dental crowns are a very common procedure that returns function, form, and appearance to your smile. Crowns, also referred to as caps, are full-coverage restorations that protect individual teeth from the gumline up. Our experienced dental group at Made Ya Smile Dental uses crowns to meet a wide array of restorative and cosmetic needs for teeth located in the front or back of the mouth. We work with a number of superior-quality materials, including porcelain fused to metal, high noble metal, and highly aesthetic Empress® all-ceramic solutions. Crowns are also used to complete a dental implant and protect a tooth following root canal therapy. If you have a damaged tooth and think you may need a crown, schedule a consultation with our skilled team of cosmetic and restorative dentists at one of our Houston, TX practice locations today.

Best Candidates

Crowns are single-tooth dental restorations customized to meet your treatment needs and blend naturally with your smile. A dental crown may be recommended to treat several types of dental concerns. Teeth that have large fillings that are no longer functioning properly may benefit from the coverage and protection of a crown. Crowns are also useful in rebuilding and restoring teeth that are worn, cracked, broken, or moderately decayed. Teeth that are discolored, abnormally small, or misshapen may also be restored with dental crown procedures. Our team places crowns on teeth that have recently received root canal treatment as these teeth are at a higher risk of breaking and crumbling when the vitality center of an infected tooth is removed.

We work with different types of materials to meet your treatment needs, budget, and preferences for your smile and customize these solutions based on where in your mouth they are needed. Empress all-ceramic crowns are typically placed in the smile zone and are a beautiful, highly aesthetic and durable option that offers the translucency and appearance of natural teeth. Porcelain fused to metal is an excellent choice for back teeth while all-metal crowns may be recommended for areas in the back of the mouth and when teeth grinding (bruxism) is a concern. Our team has over 30 years of experience in creating the ideal color, size, and shape of crowns to match your smile and can help you select the material choice ideal for bringing the best possible solution to your oral health, budget, and aesthetic goals.

What To Expect

Our team is focused on offering the most comfortable care and exceptional results for our patients. To keep you comfortable during your crown prep procedure, we will numb your tooth and gums and can provide sedation options if you prefer. Once you are numb, we will use advanced tools to remove decayed and damaged tooth structure and add strength to the tooth with a special buildup material. An impression of the tooth will then be taken and sent to our lab for your custom dental crown creation. To maintain function, spacing, and appearance while your permanent crown is being created, we will place a temporary crown over your tooth. A week or two later, we will have you come back to our office and cement your permanent crown in place. Our Made Ya Smile Dental team will ensure a comfortable bite and make any necessary adjustments to your crown.

Recovery

Following your crown prep visit, you should avoid eating until the feeling has returned to all parts of your mouth to avoid accidental bites and soft tissue damage. We will review specific instructions on how to take care of both your temporary and permanent crowns with proper home care techniques. It is not uncommon to notice slight inflammation or minor discomfort around your restoration after your crown prep visit, which can usually be alleviated with over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medication. If you have any issues with your new crown, such as if it becomes loose, dislodged, or feels uncomfortable, please contact our Houston, TX practice right away. We strongly advise against trying to recement or fix your crown on your own. This could result in significant damage to your tooth and require more extensive treatment. Our team will continue to monitor the condition of your crown at each of your bi-annual cleaning and exam visits at Made Ya Smile Dental.

Insurance Coverage

We are happy to accept most PPO dental plans and file your insurance claims on your behalf. Most dental insurance plans do provide some coverage for dental crowns. Before starting your procedure, our team will contact your provider to learn about your plan details and coverage amounts. We want you to get the high-quality care you need for a healthy smile and accept several convenient payment methods to help you cover any out-of-pocket treatment costs. Information on flexible payment financing options can also be provided during your consultation.
